NATO is planning to deploy a fleet of sea drones to monitor and protect undersea cables around Europe, with the goal of enhancing security and surveillance in the region. French Admiral Pierre Vandier, the Supreme Allied Commander, has indicated that the deployment of these drones is akin to installing CCTV cameras in urban trouble spots to monitor and record evidence. The use of unmanned surface vessels (USVs) is not new, with the U.S. Navy having been working on this technology since 2021. NATO aims to use similar platforms as those employed by the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet to simplify and expedite the deployment of USVs. The initial plan is to deploy surface USVs, but there are also plans for underwater USVs, especially in light of Russia's reported strategies to disrupt internet, GPS, and communication systems.
