Microsoft's Windows 11 is making headway in the market, slowly taking over the share from the world's most popular operating system, Windows 10. With the official support for Windows 10 set to end next year, users are facing a tough decision. The expected upgrade to Windows 11 has not materialized as quickly as anticipated, leaving many Windows 10 machines without security updates.

Microsoft has introduced a $30 one-year extension for Windows 10 updates, but this solution is not enough to address the issue of millions of machines that may become obsolete due to not meeting the system requirements for Windows 11. According to Canalys, an estimated 240 million working computers could soon be discarded into landfills.

Market statistics from StatCounter show that Windows 11 accounted for 35.5% of the Windows desktop market in October, while Windows 10's share dropped to 60.79%. If this trend continues, there will still be hundreds of millions of Windows 10 machines in use by October next year.
